Fitting IV therapy into a wedding morning
The tightest run sheet we work to. Where it fits around hair and makeup, what to decide in advance, and the one question about bruising that almost nobody asks until afterwards.
The bruising question, asked early
A cannula goes into a vein, usually in the crook of the arm or the back of the hand. Bruising or tenderness at the site is a normal and reasonably common outcome, and it can appear hours later rather than immediately.
If the dress is sleeveless, if there are close-up photographs of hands and rings, or if you simply would rather not think about it on the day, this is worth deciding before you book rather than discovering on the morning. Some people go ahead knowing it might show. Others book the day before, or decide against it. All three are sensible.
Tell your nurse at the assessment if photographs are a concern, and they will discuss site choice with you. Nobody can promise you will not bruise.
A worked example
For a 2pm ceremony with hair and makeup starting at 9am. Yours will differ — send us the real run sheet and we will find the window rather than guess at one.
On availability: our standard hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm, with Saturday by appointment. A wedding-morning start earlier than 9am — like the one below — is outside those hours and is by prior arrangement only. Most weddings fall on a Saturday, which is our most constrained day, so confirm the date and start time with us as early as you can rather than assuming the slot exists.
Sets up in a quiet room away from where hair and makeup will happen. Health assessments begin — these are private conversations, one person at a time.
Sessions overlap rather than running strictly one after another. Whoever is first into the makeup chair should be first here too.
People can be having an infusion and having their hair done at the same time, provided the arm with the cannula stays still and reachable. Coordinate this with your stylist beforehand, not on the morning.
Cannulas removed, site checked and dressed. Aim to be finished well before anyone starts getting into clothes.
Equipment packed and clinical waste removed. Nothing is left behind for anyone to deal with.
Decide these before the day
Every one of these is easy in advance and difficult at 7am.
Who is actually having one
A confirmed list, not a maybe. Each person consents for themselves, so nobody can be signed up on the morning by someone else.
The date and start time
Saturday is by appointment and limited, and a start before 9am is by prior arrangement. Confirm both with us before you build a run sheet around them. Also: somewhere to sit or recline, a power point, and enough quiet for a private health conversation — not the room with the photographer in it.
Order of people
Match it to the hair and makeup order so the two run together instead of colliding.
The night before
Anyone intoxicated at the assessment may be declined, because valid consent requires understanding what you are agreeing to. Worth saying to the group in advance.

Cannulation can cause brief discomfort, and bruising or tenderness at the site; less commonly, vein irritation, light-headedness or an allergic reaction can occur. This is a wellness service, not a substitute for medical care, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Each participant should tell the nurse if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, take regular medication, or have reacted to an infusion before.
Wedding questions
Should we book the morning of, or the day before?
The day before is calmer, takes all the timing pressure out of it, and is far more likely to fall on a weekday — which is why we often suggest it. The morning of is possible with a realistic run sheet and prior arrangement, but most weddings are on a Saturday, and Saturday is by appointment with limited availability. Lock the date in early either way. If bruising showing in photographs concerns you, the day before does not remove that risk.
Can it happen at the same time as hair and makeup?
Usually yes, as long as the cannulated arm stays still and the nurse can reach it. Tell your stylist in advance so they can plan around it, and make sure the health assessment itself happens somewhere private.
Can I surprise the bridal party with it?
You can pay for it as a gift, but not spring it on people. Each person completes their own health assessment and consents themselves, and some will decline or be declined. Tell them beforehand so the morning is not awkward.
What if someone is nervous about needles?
Tell the nurse at the assessment. Feeling light-headed during cannulation happens and is managed easily, but a wedding morning is not the time to push through something you would rather not do. Opting out is completely fine.
Can you come to our venue rather than the accommodation?
If there is a private indoor room with the venue's permission, yes. Getting-ready suites usually work. Give us the address and room, and confirm venue approval before the day. Hotels and short-stay rentals are covered on our hotels and visitors page.
